De bescheiden opzichter van een appartementencomplex, Cleveland Heep, treft tot zijn grote schrik een nimf uit een sprookjeswereld in zijn gebouw aan. Deze kan niet meer terugkeren naar haar eigen wereld. Al snel komen Cleveland en de andere bewoners van het gebouw tot de conclusie dat ook zij deel uitmaken van een sprookje.
